Album of the Season : DOM PRAG - Needle & Thread
’A new name for me, but I really enjoyed this CD produced by Phil Beer no less. Dom's vocals are strong and his renditions are emotive but it is his original guitar style that grabbed me…’ - Cornwall Folk Magazine

A lifelong exponent of the classical guitar, Dom Prag has successfully cultivated a distinctive style that incorporates blues and folk in his musical vocabulary. That formidable instrumental technique is evident from the opening bars of ‘Van Diemen’s Land’ – a convincing opening statement on voice and guitar. It’s one of four traditional songs that start the album, with the reflective ‘Lovely William’ another solo standout. Prag proves his worth as an accompanied singer on ‘Foster’s Mill’, where he’s joined in harmony by Rowan Piggott and Rosie Hodgson.
Sequenced together midway, two songs by ‘the Pitman Poet’ Tommy Armstrong are given a fuller treatment, with Richard Prag drumming on ‘Oakey Strike Evictions’. The final third is given over to Prag’s own compositions. ‘The Shoemender’ poignantly decries the parlous state of England’s town centres, with family businesses driven to the wall and replaced by identikit out-of-town retail parks – its theme effectively reinforced in Bryin Teeny-Blackburn Lindoe’s cover artwork.
Needle & Thread is an accomplished album that carries the promise of even greater things to come. Credit, too, to producer Phil Beer whose fiddle combines beautifully with Prag’s guitar and Joely Koos’s cello on ‘The Shoemender’s Tune/George Brabazon, 1st Air’.

‘Dom Prag will be big very soon…’

‘I recently saw Dom at Nettlebed Folk Club playing Richard Thompson’s ‘1952 Vincent Black Lightning (not on this album). Anyone taking on this classic song successfully needs to have great skill and precision on the guitar. Dom has both and certainly deserves your attention.’
(Graham Hobbs in Shire Folk)
‘Regulars at The White Hart Folk Club in Mickleby, near Whitby, can be hard to please but Dom was loved by all when he performed on 20 July. His repertoire is eclectic, founded in the folk tradition he discovered at the age of 18, but also including self-penned songs ... An excellent singer and absolutely superb guitarist, he makes it look so easy, though nothing but hard graft can achieve this…He is talented, young, intelligent, hard-working, and deserves the huge success that I have no doubt is coming his way… the comments below sum up a memorable night: ‘With a warm, rich voice like liquid velvet and a guitar style that looks effortless but is technically brilliant, he entertains with a confident charm that belies his young age. The evening passed all too quickly and I for one cannot wait to go and see him again.’ (John Drakes). ‘Tonight we listened to an extraordinary young man. What an amazing and varied set of songs. Great singing and tasty guitar – every one a cracker. We loved him. Watch out for him – a real, original talent.’ (Lynda Hardcastle)
(Gig Review by Ailsa MacKenzie in Folk Roundabout)
‘Outrageously talented guitarist and singer, equally strong in his original arrangements of traditional songs and his own material. We were all really blown away with how good he was. Folk Clubs of London and beyond, you really should be booking this guy, while you can still afford him!’ (Richard Hawkins, Folk in the Cellar, The Constitution, Camden)

‘Dom Prag…excellent performer. Different, subtle, young - snappy guitarist too, engaging; did one cover but his own material was best. If you run a club check this guy out. He is a good sport too. Book him !!!!!!!!!!’
(Anthony John Clarke)
‘Dom Prag ‘s music knits together British and European folk tradition, classical guitar: mining songs, poems set to music (Keats, Larkin), compositions influenced by Schubert and Shostakovich, bluesy riffs and raw vocals. His own penned songs form part of his performance. This is an exciting time to see this performer who has absorbed much from the tradition, clearly has originality and is easy in his engagement with the audience. To borrow a term from the BBC Folk Award, Dom is a Horizon Artist, an emerging artist on the scene who has made a significant increase in popularity or a special impression. In November the special impression was made with people in the local clubs as well as Bradninch Folk Club. Although not yet well known in Devon he is playing festivals and clubs across the country. Watching him play marks him out as a performer who is destined to be on the leading edge of his generation and a really nice guy. We are not alone in this observation’ (Flaxey Green)
‘I unreservedly recommend Dom Prag to any folk club or festival looking for an entertaining, talented and generous performer who has strong musical roots and new shoots’ (Gerard Edwards, Bradninch Folk Club)
‘Take it from me Dom Prag is a great fingerstyle player and songwriter with a fine voice and keen ear for a trad arrangement’
(Chris Cleverley)
“We have seen the future of folk music and it is in good hands.” (Steve West, Lymington Folk and Blues Club)
“His voice was strong and clear and his accompaniment on the guitar was accomplished and individual, occasionally betraying his classical training as shades of Villa-Lobos crept in to good effect. It was a rousing performance and we look forward to seeing him again” (Steve Primarolo, Bracknell Folk Club)
"We were lucky enough to have Dom open up a show for Chris and I, and were both really impressed with him. Great playing, singing and writing and a lovely stage presence. Watch out for Dom, his star is definitely on the rise." (Julie Matthews, While & Matthews/Daphne’s Flight)
"What a voice! Together with his brilliant guitar playing he is the real deal - only a matter of time before Dom Prag is a true Folk Star. Catch him whilst you can." (Charles Gale, Forest Folk Club, North Boarhunt)
"Dom Prag takes the place by storm with his energy, wonderful singing and beautiful Spanish guitar playing - he's a seriously talented young folk singer on the way to great things." (Mike Peach, The Anchor Folk Club)
"Dom has played our club twice and each time we were blown away by his songs, musicianship and voice; he is a breath of fresh air. His well-written and thought provoking songs grab your attention. This guy is the real deal and currently building a significant reputation on the folk and acoustic music scene." (Tony Batten, Milverton Music)
